Greeting to the dev team of 0K,

We are Spring players from China and we like the game very much. Some of us and some other potential players, however, had some difficulty in this game because English is a foreign language to us. We hope that more people can enjoy this wonderful game more easily. So we'd like to make a suggestion and we really hope that it can be realized: We want to know if Spring engine supports UTF-8? If not, could you add that into the game engine?
And if we can have a localization system (like that in Spring Lobby) in the game engine after UTF-8 is supported, some of us can help to create localization profiles for other Chinese players that are not good at English. Furthermore, if there are players coming from other non-English-speaking countries and they also have this trouble, they will benefit from it too.

Thanks.

Game itself supports localization, but engine does not support UTF8, so charset is limited atm.
So is support for rendering fonts even if it was UTF-8.

We can try and get this added to the engine, but it's probably not an easy fix.

Would it help to have any of the web site, the download page, etc, translated? What is the biggest problem when it comes to the language barrier? Mostly not being able to chat?

Well, I can understand, yet better to learn to use English so you can communicate with other people.

My English is horrible and people still guess my thoughts, but at least they will guess what I am saying.

Please don't be afraid to use English here, since you have been learning English for as long as you staying at school. Put them all in real world trial.

Beside, even in game text is not translatable, there is no much needs to do it if you can create a manual with all icons/symbol translated. Blame icon creater if they confuse you.

直接的作一个文档,然后放上所有 图标 ,几乎只用图标就是了。

Raise fund for utf-8 support, if it kick to $500, hire jK to do it.

We have people who can do the translation part. However the real problem for most people lies in the fear of unable to read English. They need to read before they can chat.

Let's hope that "noob, troll, suck, porc, etc." are not their first vocables :D

I would really like unicode support ingame too - the german ü ö ä ß got a bad support too.

Even we germans have no upper case symbol for for ß :P
Let's ban this out of our language since there are so many bad programms (like email addresses)
If you could really bring up a localized manual, we germans can use the same technique for a good german translation.

But even if I don't write all english words perfectly, I can at least understand the most of it.
That can also be used as an important training for your future.

But it is also my own oppinion to replace as many text as possible with images - they are easier to remind / recognice.

about chat translation:

would it be possible to put in a widget which (if enabled) translates the text to the native language of the player via, say, google translate? every player can give his native language or origin here, so why not use it directly?

i myself would like to see new players, especially from china which is, (seen from marketing), a big people amount to catch and spread the word.

I actually raised the question of unicode support on the spring boards some time ago. In short:

- You don't get any engine support as-is.
- It seems somewhat trivial, but tedious to the spring developers.
- None of the current devs have any intention to do it, but if a patch is provided, there's nothing to stop progress
- There was an attempt to make unicodification a GSOC project, but spring failed to get any GSOC this year.
