I seem to suck at it.

Anyone willing to share what to do in FFA? I summon CHrankAdminDeinFreund.

Particularly what army to make at start, when to build first singu, what do you need to make sufficient AA to defend the singu etc. I seem to fail at all of that or my defenses get siloed.

A checklist of things to do with minute marks would be cool. Like at some point you probably want unassisted spider factory making only fleas. At some point you want singu, at some point you want to scout your enemy with air etc.

Which factory is best to start with? Which cons are best to mass?

Deinfreund strategy:

Crush the noob while whispering sweet nothings to his other neighbours.

Now he has 2 spots.

Build lots of stuff.

??

Profit!

I'm being a bit humorous with this post but that's often what the best guys do. Blitz their weakest neighbour, syphon up the metal and then go on a tear. Try being Kingstad's neighbour in FFA :O

My own strategy is not as strong but I've picked up a few wins over decent fields.

I'm basically a vulture.

I porc up and make it really unattractive to attack me early. I'll try balance the game so that if a player is taking over I'll try tip the scales the other way. I almost never initiate large scale attacks, preferring to fly under the radar and build eco. Silo is very useful to neutralize specific threats. If one of my neighbours gets ganked, I'll send the army in and contest his area. If its timed right the invader will be all tired out from engaging porc and I can take over without having initiated any ugly confrontations.

Late game my area is a total simcity porcfest. I'll build DRP and try to win that way if I can.

But, tbh, its not a very strong strategy; it mainly allows me to be a lobster and play sim city.

PLrankZenfur want to win? Submit to me.

As a fairly good 1v1 player you should be able to beat anyone in a straight up fight, so your focus will be on surviving until the end. Then use your experience to win the duel.

It's important to always have something you can fall back to, thus I'm always aiming to have
  • Underwater/hidden singus
  • Storage with emergency metal
  • Lots of cons. My favourite cons are: Conch (underwater/eco), Welder(reclaim), Weaver(construction)
  • Athenas (esp. when you're being attacked a lot)

In general I think it's most important for you to work out how you can deal with each kind of attack. I often see myself using much less of an army and defense than other players. As long as you can keep your neighbours scouted, such things can be built to demand in an emergency and investing in economy pays better.

With a good constructor ball, you can pretty much stop any attack. A little air support will let you deal with any stragglers.

As for usual build queues. One example build I like to go for is: Amph factory, 2 conch, 2 ducks, archer, grizzly. Once the grizzly is up I check my neighbours to see if I need anything more, otherwise this is where I'll get my first fusion and then a singu. If there's a geo I'll usually build it in the first 5 minutes and moho it asap.

For late-game defense I'd recommend cloaked striders like scorps and Gauss turrets to hold off ground-based attacks. Always have your own missile silo/firepluksub in your base and don't let anyone else build one in range. Keep a few bombers around if you really need to kill a silo. Use flails, tarantulas and razors as main antiair, it's much harder to kill than screamers.

at some point you want to scout your enemy with air etc.

You always want to scout your enemy. If you don't know what your enemy is up to, I'd always invest in the scout over a fighting unit.

FFA is the hardest of all game modes.
Being skilled at FFA means not just knowing all the units, the economy, cost effective defense and offense and terraforming to name few important general skills, it also includes diplomacy, deceptions and lots of varied game theory situations that are unique to FFA.

I wrote a bunch of other stuff too but then I remembered that FFA is a game of incomplete information with game theoretical implications and I don't want You to know what I know, because if You know what I know, I have to change my strategies, so that You yet again don't know what I know.

Great post Deinfreund.

It puts an emphasis on my biggest weakness in FFA: scouting.

I hate being scouted because then the enemy knows how my defences are arranged and especially the location of my silos and anti.

Godde is 100% right in saying the more that you can keep secret from the enemy, the less likely he is to be successful against you.
