What is that, can you swim in it?

It's new age E-currency, which is generated by the true power of machine calculations...
You spend some machine power, it gives you some bitcoin, which you can trade in for $$$ on some exchange.
More machine powers invested in calculation => more complex to get bitcoin.
Ans yes, Licho you can swim in it if you would get enough machine powaz.

Initially, yes.
Now, with properly optimized hardware.
Soon, with professional coinfarm equipment only.

Min(t)ing those is a rather competitive sport.

Yeah, looks like some companies will make ASICs processors for SHA256, it will make PCs totally useless in this competition.
I've tryed it a couple of months ago and it was not worth electricily bills + hardware work cost, it will work only if you have really cheap electricity.
There are tons of calculators in the net, you can check :)

if we make a pool we can get some $$. going alone wont pay.
its free, and users can donate some process power.
a bitcoin has a value of ~ U$13. it worth.
using a modern gpu (cuda or opencl) is the way. most of zero-k users can help..
maybe u can add a option on lobby, using a little cpu doesn't impact on energy consumption.

That lobby-farm sounds totally cyberpunkish.

muffa, I can say for sure:
It will not worth if you will use CPU/Nvidia GPU.
Only modern ATI cards(HD 5970+) can make price and get investments back, and of course specialized hardware for sha256 hashing, or a botnet, if you are suddenly have one unused.
ATI have about x8-x10 performace of GeForce in bitcoin mining.
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
However there are some similar currencies like a LiteCoin, which rely on CPU more that GPU.

That does not sound like a right thing to do.

You steal from players (they pay electricity bills and they pay more than needed) and its not environment friendly.

You just burn energy doing some useless calculations ..

maybe buy a card just for mining wont payback in time. But, if had one, i can use it for free.
The rigs that make billions of hashes/S aren't available, yet.

@licho
energy: depends. my cpu(i7) consumes the same when idle or when ~20% busy. I'm just wasting it now. just stay bellow this and its free.
i think that a option on lobby to enable it and warning about energy is fine.

worth a test?

"the bitcoin is now real money"

What is real money? Is bitcoin less real than the currencies we commonly use?

"Real" money is just toy money… look Euro in europe and other currencies…

EDIT: I think mining via graphics cards or cpus of the gamer PCs is not worth it anymore. The difficulty is much too high. I used to mine at the beginning of last year when it was just before its peak value of about 30 USD with 2x Radeon 5830 (total of 600 MH/s :) After it paid off itself (computer with 2x Radeon cards) I stopped mining since power costs were higher than income by mining.

Lucky burp... I knew about bitcoin too late, if i knew when bought GPU i could bought ATI 6970 instead of silly gtx 580 :(

interesting concept. I watched this completely
But I dont get it where the money from trading btc comes from. From donations or buying btc for "real" money only? So if some rich guy buy x amount of btc for $ 100000. dollar for btc conversion rate go up?
edit: I see it is, so it is just a gamble if btc become popular.
