I want to run this game without an internet connection but the updater zero-k.exe times out after some seconds and says "download of 104.0.1-92-g4409317 has failed" with an ok button popup and then when you hit ok, it just terminates.

It's not available on steam yet and I don't like steam.

Are you saying you will remove support for the direct download after the steam version releases? That's not going to be good for your user base. I really hope you still provide a non-steam version after the steam version is released. I don't want to have a steam account just to play this game.

I love the game and the work everyone has done, but steam only will be a no go.

can you run the game directly by starting spring directly? That way you can start zero-k to update, and start spring to play the game without internet connection. Right now this does not work. It would be great if this mode was supported.

Thanks.

The ability to start the game offline. This has been requested more than once. I can only guess that the code is extremely difficult to modify to add a "Skip update this time around!" button that would work in a graceful manner.

This comes from another player who doesn't like (to put it mildly) Valve's creation. Read: Using the Steam version is not an alternative for me, so I end up playing Solitaire when there's no connection.

Just my 1.04 cents.

Offline mode is more work. You need the internet to install and there are edge cases related to this. Steam has a good offline mode that solves all these problems. See: https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Infrastructure/issues/1851

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Licho, are you seriously implying that you won't support the non-steam version after the steam version is released? If that is the case, you will show that you don't care about your existing user base and just abandon them.

As a new player, that is already not feeling good to me and you will lose players.

Please still keep supporting the non-steam portable version of the game.

As for the offline functionality, how is it that hard? If you aren't downloading new maps and don't want to join the forums, get news, all it takes is a try/catch or if statement around the code that goes online. Try connecting, if get exception, ignore it and continue. Doesn't the online code only happen at startup for updates and on the main screen for news etc, and once more on the new game screen? I mean for skirmish with AIs there should be no other online component.

If it wasn't coded with offline in mind, that's very disappointing to me. Please add support for this. I would really love this feature. Also LAN multiplayer should still work when there is no internet connection.

Please and thank you.

I looked at the link you provided. It sounds like what is needed (from the link provided) is to store the versions of the engine from last run etc, and use it when in offline mode or the internet is down. That should not be hard to implement. I don't know your code, but typically that is a pretty easy change.

Again, please implement offline mode.

Thanks

The non-steam version will continue to be supported, nobody said otherwise.

Ok that's great to hear. Thanks for confirming.

I believe it's rather easy to implement, by copying the steam behaviour. Here's a PR for that. It would have to be tested and reviewed before being merged, which I wouldn't recommend doing before steam anyway. I believe it also has more code than needed.

You can "fake" a steam install(disable all updates) by adding the following files to your Zero-K directory (note that this isn't supported nor intended to be done):

Thanks for the info. Would someone be able to implement the offline mode soon? I can be after the steam release.

Congrats again for the steam release everyone.

I would really love to have an offline mode for the portable, non-steam version.

Thanks

I don't see why.. it sounds like a great way to burn time on feature that is already provided..
Steam offline is offline mode..

It probably wouldn't take much time to provide an (unsupported) --no-download flag that skips downloads and launches ZK immediately

That would be great. Can someone implement this please.

or just a text message on the "downloading update" screen that informs user that launching in Steam Offline mode will allow you to play offline?

a text message wont work as I use the non-steam version, as others do as well and that needs a proper offline mode.
