By adding an automatic out of combat mini-morph that would boost the stats (priority: regen) or possibly add new ones. Old morph was okay except that it lazily morphed into other basic units.

Actually I like the idea.
A unit that has 2 (or more) different activable states with opposite effects. For example high damage assault that can be quick morphed into a static version with a rapid regen but also without ability to fire. Or a unit that can only fire in a very limited angle but can be deployed as a turret to gain a 360 coverage.
It adds flavour, tactical element and revards micromanagment. Think of it as a crabe basically but with more drawbacks to its function than just immobility.

Tactical morphs or loadout switches would require whole units designed about being that, though.

An example i have in my mind when thinking of this are various infantry units in Ground Control II (maybe in first one, too, as i didn't play that).

In GC2, NSA basic infantry can, by sacrificing some time on a refit, switch to anti-air weapons (and back). Virons have a similar mechanic in that their units can morph two units of one type to another type with a different role, also reversibly.

Besides equipping AA tactically this way, there are other role switches, for example tanks refitting from an MBT role to a tank-destroyer role and so on.

These are obviously very powerful abilities, so a lot of thought is required to decide which units get to have what tactical morphs. The design justification was one of the reasons the original morph revival project stalled (most technical issues have since been solved).

I liked what USA infantry units could do in CnC RA2. I mean, they could bunker up for improved armour sacrificing some time and any movement. I'd like have a few units simmilar to this. Crabe is the closes design to it, but it fails hard as any movement, even causeed by otehr units, will remove the buff. Short (5sec?) 0 metal morph would be better. And other units could od so too, like leveler (finally a turrent with ;levelrer sidearm!) or Banisher, to achieve unique turrets u can't make with cons.

Answering to future argumnents taht this will cause porc. Actually this will llessen teh porc. HLT can't be moved, turret like units do. moving line of defences can't be called porc by design ^^.

Commanders having a bunker-down ability was proposed often as something like this. However, commanders kind of already do have a bunker-down ability that's just a bit complicated to use.

Crabes not being involuntarily unpacked by bumping fleas sounds like a bugfix.
