Odd Stuff When Launching Game

I am unable to launch via the icon pinned to my taskbar (Windows 10, bug would affect at least Windows 7+) due to the game not launching from there elevated despite the game having been configured as requiring elevation (Which it does need).

Launch via the actual exe:

I get this message: "Setup directory is not writable!"
"Please use the newly created desktop icon to start Zero-K not this one. Zero-K.exe wil be moved to C:\Users\Stuart98\Documents\My Games\Spring"
As a note that desktop icon doesn't launch the game either, had to create an actual shortcut rather than an internet shortcut to the game's exe (WHY WOULD YOU EVEN DO THIS?!) in order to get it to launch via shortcut. It did use to work, but it would still come up with the next message.

After roughly a minute, I get "Move failed, please copy Zero-K.exe to a writable folder".

After a couple of seconds, Zero-K will procede to launch normally.

On a possibly related note, when Zero-K launches spring it usually comes up with an infinite black screen, requiring a restart until I can get the spring loading UI to come up.

Help? Can you make playing Zero-K less of a chore pl0x? :)

welcome USrankStuart98

thanks for your feedback, hopefully it helps devs reassess priorities.

installer problem is already known:
https://github.com/ZeroK-RTS/Zero-K-Infrastructure/issues/608
Don't ask me why issue is closed... you know it still affects users.

No doubt ZK has suffered from a broken installer... its probably even more the case now that ZK devs decided to "break free" from the rest of spring community, first consequence being that most other spring lobby clients no longer work with zk. For those who have a problem dealing with ZK bugs, there is no escape...

There is an alternative ZK installer project here:
https://github.com/TurBoss/zero-k-installer
Since it hasn't been started by an official ZK dev, chances are it will not be promoted on zk website...

That alternative installer works like a charm.

Unfortunately, my second problem is still a thing. :(

Pretty annoying having to keep killing spring over and over again hoping that the UI will load.

I'll open a new thread for this in a second.

USrankStuart98 post a link to your infolog.txt to diagnose the UI problem.

Is there something wrong with your sounds?

Sounds work fine when the game loads normally, occasionally I'll get no sounds.

Could you add LogFlush = 1 to springsettings.cfg. Your log was truncated and perhaps that would help.

Part of the problem is that the new installer would have to play nice with Steam, so I think there's hesitation on fixing up the current broken installation process instead of going whole-hog on Steam installation integration.

Is an installer even needed in Steam situation?

Based on recent evidence, this works pretty good in out-of-steam case, and current default installer doesn't do anything with Steam either.

No, all that you would have to have for steam is either weblobby or something to launch to bring up the battle list. "steam install integration" is basiclly account integration.

Issue seems to have vanished for now, I'll be sure to do that if I see it again.
