I started remaking awards images awhile back, is it worthwhile to get back into it? This is where I started with the CA award:


It's meant to be seen on a dark or transparent background, looks a little stupid on white. Anyway, worthwhile to keep going with remakes?

I think it would be better with a transparent shadow around the center.

Maybe there can be a little bit blood if you are logged in into a account for a over 18 years old player =D.

I think the module icons turned out really nicely for a mass-produced type of icon, but I hope to put a bit more work into awards to make them more pretty and unique. I'm still working every now and then but I haven't really made something I really like yet.

I like the badge/medal much more than any trophies. Imo ribbons wouldn't be bad either, especially if we were to expand the diversity of unlockables.

First thing I must say is don't feel you have to model them over the existing awards. "Spoils of war" deserves a much cooler symbol than the recycle arrows!

Second, you're doing a good job but I can't help but comment that the skull looks like it has ears. Looking forward to more.

I like the most awards as they are.

I don't wan't to avoid a new look, but some players also have opposite opinions.

Or do you want a icon-set selectable in your user-page? :)

( But this can increase the processing time for zero-k.info ... )

I'm quite open to suggestions CarRep but at the moment I can't think of anything better that still be distinguishable at a small size. Also if I re-use the designs from command icons, like the reclaim/recycle arrows, it will maintain some consistencies between designs.

Once I settle on some general design guidelines between awards icons, I will pump a bunch out, but at the moment I am undecided.

Ion, ability to chose an icon set theme is a good idea :)

More free time and inspiration leads to more advances:



They are maybe a tad blurry at the original 30x40, I might export larger if I find that larger images don't break anything. I'll probably finish this weekend though since I am finally reasonably satisfied with the style I've found.

IMO the awards system isnt great. For endgame statistics, the graph is actually way better and more informative. An achievements system ala Starcraft would be better- They can be neat tricks or strats, such as snipe a commander with a prescision bomber, kill 3 mexes with a single scout/raider, make a geo within the first 3 minutes of the game, make most of your teams metal extractors, etc.

These might just be too difficult to track, but the current awards as they are dont mean very much.

But for feedback just on visuals, the air trophy should be wings or a jet, shell needs to be more obviously a shell, i dont know how the 'white' icons will show up, against this background they really just dont show. Navy icon is great though.

Oh, and finally: We need more module icons! D: Flamer weapon, missile (not rocket!) weapon, AA module upgrade, torpedo weapon, etc etc. What was the technique/can i have your source files to replicate this?

Awards are great. They are no replacement for an achievement system (which I would love, should we make an effort for this to be the focus for 0.9?), but they are useful in their own way.

Unlike unlocks and achievements, they are unlimited. No matter how hard we try, there will always be people who unlock unlocks and achieve achievements faster than we can make them. So they give players an extra little side-game to reach hall of fame each month with awards, or just to make their player page look a bit more impressive, without needed continuous development or maintenance.

So for 'serious' players they might not mean much, but I think they are ideal for the more casual playerbase.

I like the -most-mexes-idea.

I also like the idea of having a Raiding-Award.

But I think we should make more fail-awards and give them a red ugly border.
The icons should grow in size:

> 5: size 1.1
> 10: size 1.3
> 25: size 1.5
...
