Why havent you guys sent a mail to TB for a WTF is Zero-K

Dont know what "WTF is.." is.

its a review show for games, anything from $4 indie games on steam to full blown full price retail boxed games.

"If you're a developer and would like your game featured on our WTF is? series, please contact pr[at]cynicalbrit.com."
From description.

We don't have top-hat hat dlc yet.

More seriously, the (lobby) interface is quite lacking. He always goes over the state of the options screen and the ones in zklobby are terrible. (you can still change stuff but its not noob-proof or polished)

Other than that little detail, which he might overlook anyway, being free and "indie" and open source etc. I don't see any reason why not. I can send an email if noone else objects.

i was tempted to, but never got round to it, then got swamped by college
its a good idea though i think he'll like it apart from our lovely welcoming community and the interface as maackey says

given that the average WTF is... video gets 100.000 to 300.000 views, could the spring servers handle such an amount of players, and what kind of deals are made with the hosting companies about bandwidth? You could basicly call for a dos-attack on yourself.

I dont think people downloads games they just like watching show/his comentary style. I would expect something like less than 1% from views from vid who will download game. Spring has been twice on slashdot and well we still lack players and slashdot is known for such "dos" attacks.
I dont even know spring was slashdoted or not when article apeared? Because it is so damn common when you want to read that article and... it is gone!

Well I think it is a good idea.

also, the default settings of a clean ZK/Spring install are pretty bad, but this deserves a thread of it's own.

edit
(i mean things like chatbubbles, smoothscroll camera, and no clear keybinds for unit and building construction will turn many RTS veteran away. If i hadnt known spring before ZK id have discarded it after a couple of games because of the way the controlls feel)

I would recommend waiting until there is a reasonably bug-free proper engine release, so he doesn't open up the battle list to see all these battles tagged INCOMPATIBLE.

+1 to bubbles off.

Smoothscrool is awesome but hard to get used to, and requires plenty of mouse precision, so probably +1 to that off also.

About keybinds, the gesture keybinds are actually the best keybinds I've seen in an RTS. But you want to use the 'alternate' layout. So 'D' starts the build menu, and you use the surrounding keys

W E R
S D F
X C V

to navigate. I think that version of gestures should be default.

thing with smooth scroll is that it is slow. You cant snap quickly form point to point. Split second camera control is the most important.

Of course you can! You can smooth scroll on minimap. Its very consistent and efficient.

As for bubbles those are great, they make you really spot ally messages and clicking on them goes to alert. Very convenient to the point defualt console could be off by default because it mostly shows engine/spec spam.

Bubbles have some really irritating flaws. There is still waaay to much wasted space. And the fly-off the screen is bad; it is something that attracts attention when there is no reason to. It should have a nice alpha-fade instead.

This is far from perfect, but a mockup of how space could be used more efficiently:

on a laptop with limited screenspace they take up a lot of room. Or can you adjust their size? (i have had them tunred off for a long time)

couldn't avatars be the same as the avatars in the lobby?
+0 / -0
They are the same avatars as in forum and lobby.

Also note that bubbles ONLY show ALLY chat atm. Nothing more.
They also make "ping" sound only for ally messages.

Why I disabled them.

In start of game they create huge lag when appears 100 of them with some server spam message. Since I constantly change monitors... on laptop 1366x768 they waste space. On pc with 1920x1080 thats ok.

When I said it is a good idea I didn't say we would have to do no work. The UI would need a bit of fixing such as keybinds and bubbles off.

Agree about chat bubbles, etc.
Lucky's mockup is perfect.

We need to integrate the integral and the marking menu somehow, with the same arrangement and keybinds.

I think changing the buildmenu hotkey to 'D' is worthwhile. Comma can construct and shoot special weapons so something would have to be done to the special weapon hotkey. We're not using 'C' for anything so it could easily move there.

I think car's radial menu is a bit better than gesture for hotkeys because using gesture for hotkey purposes just interferes with mouse movement.

Integral is still required for orders and factory queues so I'm not sure what to use for the default UI. Maybe radial could appear when a constructor is selected? That is still a pretty poor solution.
