Why not alphabetize it?

This would be too easy.

Why it should be? Matchmaker makes automagically matches with user

It would be nice to have a toggle to change ordering.
Typical ordering criteria from other systems:
-Alphabetical (as mentioned)
-Friends first, own clan first
-By status (Available first, Idle/AFK/In battles last)
-Frequently contacted (show people you have contacted first in the order of most recent contact first). This may be better to put in a separate list along with the alphabetical one to make things easier.

Let me take a wild guess:
we need CZrankAdminLicho for this?

I already posted his default answer. So maybe there will be a change? :-)

Whenever I bring in friends from Steam or IRC, I have to tell them to enter the chat, then scroll through and look for their name in the non-alphabetized list to add them as in-game friends or to party.

Yup this game constantly punishes people who have friends

I don't wanna break your workflow, but this exists:

Alternatively, you can also have your friends join a custom room or join your clan and invite you in the clan chat.

I'm on Linux and that doesn't work.

AFAIK the player list used to be sorted, but in order to reduce lags, this is no longer guaranteed. The players without icons are also caused by lobby messages being ignored while games are running.

Why can't we have a non-laggy lobby and an alphabetized list at the same time?

Lag from sorting a list of maybe 50 names? Something is seriously wrong. Have the client sort it using the sorting function provided by your container in C# or C++ or whatever it is. This is practically free.

Works for me. Sounds like this should be a bug report.

CHrankAdminDeinFreund is incorrect, except there is perhaps a nugget of truth that could be communicated in a non-misleading way via a few paragraphs. The cause of the players without icons is unknown, and I don't recall any bug reports about them.

Because we don't have so much devs who will freely work around it. Even with all bugs and lags they have done tremendous work.

Ladies and gentlemen - the FOSS forum warrior. You can spot them by their favorite phrases: "You can always make a merge request" or "There aren't enough devs willing and able to fix everything".

You're not wrong, but complaining about bugs in detail is how bugs get fixed. Eventually. After playing with this a bit more, I found the lobby alphabetization bug shows itself at the same time that the game ignores my config file and reverts back to default resolution (it leaves the config file itself alone, preserving the settings, but ignoring them). Sorting itself functions fine, but doesn't seem to be called at all whenever it ignores my config. Which is about 1/3 of the time I launch the game. Windows 7 64 bit, 640x480 resolution, disabled ati/intel compatibility and bare minimum on all other settings with a drop-down box. Fun bugs, different from the one DeinFreund mentioned, I believe.
