Personally I feel like 90% of games release on the Unity engine have incredibly awful performance, many of them cooking my computer for absolutely no reason - even when I'm in a main menu and nothing's happening. The complete lack of any usable settings menu or config file in all of them didn't help much either.
Zero-K seemed alright half a decade ago. I don't really know anything about recent versions though.
