You can win with far less than that - but the chance goes down with the skill level of the game. On top of gaining advantage, accomplished players are adept at capitalising on that advantage in such a fashion that allows little chance for comebacks. This is mostly done by making less mistakes (less variability = less outlier scenarios), investing wisely, and negating comeback options with scouting.
