When you are deep into the game, you tend to ignore the small chat window.
The solution is forcing you to hear the words as speech.

Most non native English speakers will have problems understanding the words anyway.

Someone decided that hearing broken words in a foreign language intermixed with ambient explosions is better because you don't need to waste 0.27 seconds to read the chat.

Yeah, it's especially helpful when a teammate has russian name on his comm.

I CHOOSE. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK. QUESTION MARK.

Submitted a patch to default TTS to disabled.

Edit: it got closed as "won't happen". Happy listening.

Although there are some people who dislike that (always were), I believe that TTS is very useful especially to newbies who tend to miss chat a lot due to overload.
Even if they don't understand a word or two, at least it alerts them to chat..

nobody else believes that though

Poor newbies have this enabled, I feel sorry for them...
I forgot it even exists, it is like the first thing to disable when installing ZK (the second being Chili Bubbles).

Perhaps there should be a clearly visible icon on the chat window that toggles text-to-speech on/off?

I'd wager that for every person who thinks TTS is a good thing there are about 5 others who can't stand it. It just happens that the person who decides on settings is one of the former but if you were to do a poll about it, I'm sure the truth will be revealed.

I can't actually remember the last time I even saw TTS implemented on any software, game or otherwise. Isn't it primarily just used for disabilities? What I'm trying to say is that there is a reason nobody ever uses it, it's incredibly annoying and can easily be trolled by spamming in chat.

Also, why assume that every player is an English speaker? There are regularly games played between random nubs in locked games who are all Germans or Russians and every one of them probably has to go through process of finding and disabling this stupid setting, just like the rest of playerbase.

Using ZK TTS is a good way to learn english, the offical language of the world!

As far as I know, the only use for text-to-speech is to make newbies learn about the widget list settings menu so they can turn it off.

I'd like to see a poll regarding how many people actually use it. If the overwhelming majority do not it seems very silly to have it on by default.

Having my speakers blare "you fucking lobster make units resign resign resign resign" at me sounds like a really good incentive to uninstall the game and never come back.

Yeah, you can use the TTS-learned skills in real-life situations.

For example knowing how to say "I CHOOSE. GRILLED LOBSTER." sounds helpful when eating out in a restaurant.

PLrankAdminSprung pls stahp QQing and go maek dat on/off icon for teh chazz0rz. We needs it nao! :O

People being able to quickly and easily toggle TTS means that new players who hate the feature can simply turn it off. All it needs is for someone to make sure that the button is very visible and that its meaning can be understood at a glance.

I think it's a nice feature that should be an option, but should not be on by default. There is far too much trolling in it with "///***".

Only time I'm using TTS is when I accidentally hit the key combination that activates the windows one. And then it keeps reading out everything I mouse over, just to troll me, until I find a way to turn it off.
