Continuing from http://zero-k.info/Forum/Thread/1801.

Factories should have themes for unit names to make them feel more cohesive. For example, shield bots are already named after various types of criminals.

Hovers are just a few names away from a medieval weaponry theme. Change Scrubber to Dagger, Scalpel to Javelin, and Penetrator to Morning Star. Spiders are also pretty close to an arthropod theme; just rename Cudgel and Infiltrator.

Cloaky bots have particularly weird names. Warrior and Sharpshooter are generic, while Rocko and Jethro are extremely specific names left over from TA. Hammer and Zeus are also from TA.
From Pxtl:
> I'd go with a haunting theme for the cloakies - ghosts and wights and spooks and poltergeists and bogeymen and spirits and whatnot.
From Antero:
> (btw cloakybot factory needs a rename too... is cloaky even a word?)

What do you think of Lance as name replacement for Penetrator? I think it'd fit even better than Morning Star, which isn't too shabby either though.

Lance is good. I like it.

Cudgel -> Scarab
Spy -> Mantis (from Praying Mantis)

Rename scrubber glaive? Altough that might be a bit hard to tell stuff appart then. I support a ghost/wight team for cloakybots. Although I am completely at loss for unit names.

What will we do for specialist? Maybe insect theme? We could name Sumo->Lady Bug, Pyro->Firefly, Jack->Mantis, Freaker->Ant (For their constructing powers?)

And what about gunships?

Maybe airship would work with "Mythical creatures" theme, with Vamp->Vamp, EMPBomber(forgot name)->Witch, Inferno->Demon

Hard making up good names :P, just spouting out ideas in hopes of triggering some creativity somewhere.

I thought insects was for spider lab?
Specialists ought to be renamed last. They're already complicated enough.

Air ought to get a bird theme.
Avenger -> Eagle
Vamp -> Hawk (I know TA used it)
Stilleto -> Swift
Firestorm -> ??? (I would say Pelican if not for the unfortunate water association)
Shadow -> Kingfisher
Licho -> Quail (you quail when you see one =P)

Scarab, Mantis, and Phoenix are all really good. And I wouldn't mind either Lance or Morning Star.

Stiletto -> Thunderbird

I'd use Eagle for the heavier fighter and Hawk for the lighter one.

Licho -> Condor? Roc?

Cudgel -> Scarab is epic.

Bird theme for planefac is also good.

Firestorm -> Phoenix is very nice. TA has a bomber called Phoenix, but I don't think we have to be super puritan about this. If only a few units share names with TA ones, it's fine.

Stiletto -> Thunderbird is also great. Nice to have two kinds of mythical birds, one for fire one for lightning.

In TA Arm has both a plane called Hawk and one called Eagle. Using something else would be good.

Licho is Licho, I wouldn't change it even though it's not a bird. :)

Cloaky factory names (no idea of matching): Ghost, specter, banshee, spirit, phantom, wraith, shade, shadow, and revenant.

Harrier, Kite, and Falcon would be good fighter names. Or one of them could be called King Raptor. It fits with the bird theme! :P

Could use Roc for Shadow if we want another mythical bird.

Vulture already fits but Owl might make more sense, since they're known for being stealthy and having good vision.

For reference, I made a wiki page about the units that still have TA names:

http://code.google.com/p/zero-k/wiki/OTAnames?ts=1329445329&updated=OTAnames

So most of these need to be replaced. Imo a few TA names can be left in the game though, if they fit well and are used sparingly. Like the Phoenix example above - it just fits the unit too well.

Kudos on taking the renaming initiative! Some of the suggestions so far a pretty good too.

I threw together a suggestion list based on spooky/evil theme for cloaky bots. Feel free to improve on it, I probably relied on the thesaurus too much:

Rector -> Specter
Glaive -> Imp
Scythe -> Ghost
Rocko -> Wight
Zeus -> Fiend
Tick -> Spook
Warrior -> Demon
Hammer -> Haunt
Sharpshooter -> Revenant
Jethro -> Spirit
Eraser -> Shade

For the static defenses, take the Chainsaw/Hacksaw and work with that for AA:

Cobra = Grinder
Defender = Nail
Razor's Kiss = Razor blade
Screamer = Sledgehammer

And roll with the Lotus for land
Stinger = Snapdragon
Pit Bull = Flytrap
Stardust = Bramble
Faraday = Thorn
Newton = Tumbleweed

FWIW, I think something like Pheonix is fine. It makes more sense on the ZK napalm bomber than it did in TA anyway.

Nice pxtl, although I have to admit I'm terribly fond of Faraday and Newton names. How many games have units named after physicists that fit so perfectly? :D

@Luckywaldo - Some of those I hadn't thought of yet. I like the Sharpshooter as the Revenant. It's too bad the name Reaper is already used in the Tank lab - even if the Reaper is renamed, it would be confusing to reuse the name. Otherwise Reaper would be perfect for the Scythe.

Fiend as Zeus is another good one. Eraser as Shade is good too. I still prefer "Bogeyman" for Warrior - I always like the names to be a bit silly. Plus having "Imp", "Demon" and "Spectre" and "Revenant" is a bit too Doom (although it's not like they own those names).

My idea

Rector => Angel (the invisible helper)
Glaive => Spook (it's just fun to say and people seem to talk about raiders the most)
Scythe => Grim (Reaper's taken, next best thing - it's invisible and carries a scythe... Grim sounds less powerful anyways for a squishy cloak-raider)
Rocko => Ghoul (good general-purpose ghostly name that doesn't imply invisibility)
Zeus => Sandman (he puts you to sleep)
Tick => Sleeper... or Omen... idunno, not much you can do here.
Warrior => Bogeyman (it's the big scary thing in the closet)
Hammer => Poltergeist (action-at-a-distance)
Sharpshooter => Nightmare (it's just scary)
Jethro => Spirit (I'm an AA unit! There's nothing else to say about me!)

Yeah, I like the physicist names too. They kind of sit outside of the normal defenses anyways. I just mostly liked the idea that Big Daddy Lotus was a Snapdragon.
