very nice when GBrankpinkjay makes useless newbie stuff in background and noone even tries to explain why it should not be anni or anything else

Label spam is especially bad, because newbies don't know how to remove labels. I imagine it's rather discouraging to have a bunch of derogatory labels on your base for the whole game.

A partial solution would be to make labels disappear after a while, for example one minute.

Agreed, there's very little reason to have a marker last longer. Perhaps keep a permanent marker function but make it not the default? Label clutter gets intense, and I imagine most people remove it manually after a minute or so regardless.

When thinking about spam please also consider small games. In FFA and 1v1 permanent labels can be pretty helpful. (Note down units, mark buildings)

If you only implement it for clusterfuck(>4v4) that sounds perfectly reasonable.

I also encourage you to remove your markers when they're no longer of importance. That's what I try to do most of the time as to not overload people with labels.

Yeah labeling opposing facs is useful past the one minute mark, though in the current system it'll likely get deleted when people clear the map of other markers too.

DErankChesti why not warn and eventually mute these offenders instead of complaining about them on the forums? Don't tell me they're free to break three rules without getting any penalties while other people get one for not breaking any rule.

Probably depends on the kind of warning. Keep in mind I didn't watch the replay. All the information I got was from reading through this thread, so I'm not really in a position to give advice on precisely what action to take.

Things that might be worth taking into account are who started, concent on what exactly was written, the amount of markers/drawing done, whether any person removed their clutter, whether any person (eventually) tried to help the player and cooperate in any meaningful way, etc.

Problem is that it became (sadly) too normal that you actually not recognize every insult / misbheaviour towards newbies.

Just keep in mind the goal is to get players to change their behavior. They should be helpful to new players more than anything. Chances are role models and encouragement help. If people have trouble recognizing that they are harmful, remind everyone that a certain action might not be helpful in solving a newbie's errors.

You could give them a written warning then kick them if the behavior continues. If it continues past that, you could just mute them for 1/3/6/12/24 hrs.

Please please please don't (or at least make it configurable).
I tend to miss labels and find after a few minutes (or the end of the game in the worse cases) that someone asked for a Thunderbird or some other unit.

A few times it was still relevant when I saw it and affected the game.

Making label disappearance time configurable sounds good to me, since newbies being unable to remove them is still a problem in itself. Default time could be the 1 min.

It's also softer than muting/warning everyone who places a questionable remark on a newbie's base.

Alternatively, manual label erasure could be made so obvious that even total newbies would know how to do it, but I don't have a suggestion on how to accomplish this.

Another option:
Any experienced player should spend ~10s every ~5m to remove outdated/useless markers. In a 8v8 there should be more than enough APM leftover for that, especially when everybody has time to spam silly markers.

The reduction of disruptive noise for all teammates should consequently increase win chance by 10% and thus boost elo by 70.
