That made me think of dwarf fortress first, 300 after reading JohnHunter's comment again. You have to put blind cave ogres and giant olms in the well, otherwise the nobles wont have enough fun.

Wells for dumping nobles are old-school, there are always cheaper way to deal with them.

What really deep holes are really for:
1) Dropping the ocean into subterranean layer (killing all subterranean ecosystems) or magma (yay!) so you get a ton of power from an ocean dam and a lot more dry land (while also devastating surface marine ecosystems and hopefully causing climate changes! Get your own Aral Sea now!).

2) Making an archery pit. Just make the bottom layer of well a fortification ring and drop disarmed sentient catch there for trainees to shoot. Shooting live targets is quickest way to get experience!

Also, be sure to add a retractable-bridge entrance into your pit, so that when remains of live targets decompose into dead skeletons, you can harvest their corpses and make *goblin bone bolts* to shoot the next batch with.
