You go forward when pressing forward because the unit is pointing forward, but your turret aim is pointing backward. Movement and aiming being decoupled is good because it allows more control and because that's how Spring units behave in general. Note how non-FPSed units cannot strafe either (imagine strafing Rockos, add rocket jumping and you've made a Quake mod).
