3 Before Elo was introduced we had exactly the same problems you described. Blaming its visibility is the wrong thing to do. The only difference between displaying the number and not doing so is that now ( with display ON) people like me have an easier time teaching weak players and playing as a team. 3 Before Elo was introduced we had exactly the same problems you described.
