It's a number. I go through peaks and troughs (most recently a trough). Being good needs work. When I have a string of failures, I look closely at my game and try to work out what I'm doing wrong then consciously try to correct it. Anyone can run around a rugby field, to take on the All Blacks, you've got to work at it.

I find doing something irregular for the sake of doing it is not fun because [b]losing is not fun[/b]. On the other hand, facing an apparently insurmountable situation and then doing something crazy that turns it around is possibly the most fun it's possible to have in a game. Solving problems with new solutions is creativity. Doing new things that don't solve problems is a waste. I don't want people who are deliberately trying to waste resources that could be put to better use on my team. That's not fun for me, and anyone doing it is being selfish.

You're more likely to get fun, interesting, creative games with genuinely innovative (rather than gimmicky) play where everyone is trying to play the ideal way rather than where they are "just trying to have fun." Everyone will read the ideal differently, which means everyone will play differently, and anyone could come up with a whacky tactic that turns the game down a new path.

I have found in the past that deliberately looking for games different from my usual habitat has helped. New experiences can provide new perspectives on old situations.
