While I see that downvotes can be used constructively by disagreeing with someone, which can lead to helpful and meaningful discussions, oftentimes that "meaningful and helpful" discussion only happens when the downvotee writes a counterargument to the person he downvoted. Because this is exceedingly rare; it would be better to simply remove the negative influence within the Zero-K forum as it only creates division between members of our community and rarely leads to meaningful discussion.

Its a mechanic for showing agreement or disagreement with the content or tone of a post, nothing more[/q] Except it doesn't actually show you what you disgree/agree with on his post-- it just shows that you disagree, no one knows whether its just part of the post or whether its the whole post, unless the downvotee responds with a counterargument, which is probably more helpful.
