It's AoE2 meets civ. I can't believe I only heard of this game recently since it was released 2004.I prefer it to both the predecessors because it really feels like they improved on both formulas by hybridising them. Emphasises economy and teching, and while it's possible to be aggressive early, it's not standard afaik.
I haven't played it yet, but it looks pretty good. Very tactical game with emphasis on unit retention. I'm probably going to pick it up when next it's on sale. Not that I have time to play games these days...
Kinda going the way of FTP. In-game real money shop + commanders being locked, paying for the full game doesn't give you full content, have to grind out bulletins and stuff. It feels like too many things have very hard counters. Not much 'fun' factor in it, too competitive for my tastes. (ZK has a good fun factor as there are plenty of tools available and a lot more freedom than just doing things in a build order.)

I personally find it enjoyable when I have a nice decent size environment to manipulate and lots of tools to play with. I really enjoy the feeling of freedom of creativity instead of being bound to specific builds. Automation puzzles are fun as well!
