So the selection order stuff is quite cool. I can select fighting units without selecting conjurer. But what if I want instead to select only conjurer? There should be an inverse toggle button that selects the inverse of what would otherwise get selected.

I think with a key you can select more than what would otherwise get selected. But I do not think there is an inverse modifier. So I can select only fighters. Or I can select both fighters and conjurers. But I cannot select only conjurers.

I would select one Conjurer than either Ctrl+X (Conjurers on screen) or Ctrl+Z (Conjurers everywhere)

Did not know about ctrl-X that is helpful. Easier to select conjurers using an area (and my inverse modification) than select one unit amongst a bunch of units though.

You don't need ctrl-x, if you double click a unit you will immediately select that unit plus all units of the same type in the screen. I rely heavily on this feature when organizing my armies.
