Why not use Linux for the servers?

Perhaps M$ submitted an offer you can't decline... :P

why do you think your (actually useful) comment will change anything?

But they still need to ask for donations and buy a Windows license (x5).

I just realized that my desktop is about as powerful as Licho's server because I upgraded it so much for no reason for network simulations. I shopped and found a sever on Ebay with about the same specs as Licho's server. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-T310-Tower-Server-Quad-Core-X3440-32GB-RAM-4TB-Storage-PERC6i/132491938555?hash=item1ed9228afbThe HP Compaq 6200 Pro Microtower Business PC I bought at Goodwill for 30 USD is actually almost as good as the desktop I am running now that I built in 2013. It having a Intel Core i5-2400 compared to the Intel Core i5-3570 I am running off of right now. I guess my point is, unless you are running super computer, on a actuated hardware deprecation cycle, or run Windows, buying a new PC just to upgrade is for suckers except you are underspeced.

As far as I am aware, server uses Windows mostly because that's what Licho is familiar with.

A lot of the infrastructure code uses Windows technologies and frameworks, thus its run on a windows server. Like someone else mentioned, much of it boils down to familiarity, though there are probably exponents of both Apache and Windows that would happily state their cause all night long.

Windows vs. Linux is part of a more general set of decisions about the tradeoff between money and time. How much time would someone need to dedicate to run and maintain a Linux server for 'free'? What else could the contributor spend their time on? Would anyone want to do such a task in the first place? Would the uptime be as good? Professional server hosting is a highly efficient use of money as it effectively buys a lot of equivalent contributor time for a relatively low cost. Think about what else we could buy. Art assets are expensive and hiring workers is even more expensive.

It's mostly about Licho's familiarity (which is a decent reason of course, as he's the main infra dev). Windows is of course not generally superior to Linux for server hosting.

How much Hydris donated to ZK and how much Linux servers he maintain as game infra dev?

While the ^ above post is example of absolutely unnecessary "red herring" style argument, it all boils down to "is there anyone wanting to volunteer doing same on Linux servers", who is also able to prove having necessary skill set and at least basic trustworthiness? I guess that current answer is "no". On the purely meritocratic terms, self-maintaining servers on Linux would provide - in "gains" department - more flexibility and less risk of incompatibility with future version of whatever micro$oft throws at it users (and future cost of upgrading "depreciated" software). ---

While the ^ above post is example of absolutely unnecessary post in any meaning, it all boils down to complete nothingness. I couldn't resist my temptation to make my trollpost above. Sorry i'm only weak human. My souls is corrupted with dark trolling. Btw. Its funny to watch/read how Linux fanboys wage war with Windows fanboys. Its like topics when vegans discuss with meat eaters. I love such fanaticism.

Ultimately, the obviousiest choice for time is reinvention wheeling to ensure that the wheel is compatibility later on. This way you avoid having incompatibility with both M$ and linux versions. To that anvil, our developers should be spending time making their own operation system to ensure compatible and not reinvention wheeling bugs to ensure bugs preservation for future debug. [Spoiler]This post is satire and not a serious suggestion. Seriously, we don't have a lot of infra developers. We have like 3-5 at most. Note that most infra devs are also zkdevs who fix bugs with the actual game.

Start here: https://zero-k.info/mediawiki/index.php?title=Zero-K:Developing#Modifying_infrastructure.2FtoolsSet up a test instance and play around with it, then ask questions in #zkdev chat. You'll need a copy of Windows.

Not necessarily because I knew SQL Server ran on GNU/Linux since 2012 and it is officially supported now by Microsoft. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-editions-and-components-2017?view=sql-server-linux-2017If I did get a copy of Windows, which edition would it be?

I can't tell you anything more than what's documented on the wiki at that link. I haven't tried to do it myself. If you try to get it working under Linux and encounter problems, probably the first troubleshooting step anyone will offer you is "try it under Windows". My guess is that any vaguely recent version of Windows should work, in any edition.

Why do I need to be an audio engineer, game infrastructure dev, 3d model artist, C# programmer, etc to make any critiques and suggestions regarding the game? I considered donating to this game and the current spending going towards temporary Windows licenses when there are free options is a legitimate question.
