What about you guys? Any one use a SSD? I heard that a HDD -> SSD is better that CPU upgrade. +0 / -0

Licho 12 years ago I got cheap 128GB SSD as main system disk and its been amazing! Yes its much better than any CPU upgrade I had in the past.. its blazing fast now. +0 / -0

Antelope 12 years ago I use a 64 GB as a system disk and it is awesome! My BIOS spends more time booting than Win 7 does now. It's blazing fast. From the time I hit power button to the time I am on my homepage in Chrome: 47 sec. I backup an image of the 64 GB system disk to one of my 1 TB disks every week. Worst case, if my SSD crashes, I can use my image to get going again in no time. +0 / -0

[DE]Rick 12 years ago Some time ago i bought a ssd too and its really fast. Booting is like 10x faster than before and most programs load alot faster too. I installed autodesk inventor and it was done in 5 mins.....(used to take way longer than that xd). +0 / -0
Antelope 12 years ago I need the bigger drive for photo editing. I've got an 18 MP DSLR that shoots ~33 MB RAW files. When I want to do batch operations on pictures (like the 1600 pictures I took of my company softball tournament) it takes forever to read and write those files off my standard 1 TB storage drive. If I could transfer these pictures to my SSD, edit them, and then transfer them to my storage drive things would go much quicker. I've only got the operating system and my Spring directory on my little 64 GB drive, but it's already close to full. +0 / -0

BT 12 years ago Got a 128gb for boot+ a few games and it is amazing. If you are building, or looking to upgrade, cut back on the CPU and buy SSD+HDD. I can't express how good it is, however here is a video Tom's did that does. niktu 12 years ago Bitover a year ago i started my adventure with ssd with one 64GB Crucial m3, as a hdd cache drive for my laptop (heavy, 2hdd desktop-replacement contraption), responsiveness increase was well worth it. So year ago for my desktop build i choose 120GB Vertex 3 for my system drive ... along with i5 2500K it turned to be screaming ... boot times crazy fast, and heaviest multitasking didnt slow it a bit. Fell in love. Warning: instant responsiveness that gets you addicted ... each time you go to computer with classic hdd makes you cringe and think "how they can put up with this slugishness" :) About 7 months ago i specced my new samsung laptop, saved cash on processor (and choose cash and power economic i3) and put it into more ram and 120GB Vertex 3. Turned out to be good choice, easily beats pants off more expensive i7 laptops with HDDs, hibernates and resumes in a blink, while being quite battery efficient (performance boost from SSD is cheaper in power than trying to get that performance from higher specced cpu ... strong cpus tend to be power hogs compared to modern SSDs). As a bonus, my bios supports passing through HDD password on boot/resume, so i have power/performance efficient full disk encryption done by hardware on SSD, using my password to unlock it (yeah, it's done better in Vertexes 3 vs older Vertex 2, dont gonna bore you with proper sandforce chipset numbers) So there it is, now you know why i'm usualy first to choose spot on map ... rarely i see anybody launching on spring map before me :P +0 / -0
[DE]Rick 12 years ago (edited 12 years ago) Since when does faster cpu makes your hdd faster lol? When i copy stuff or open programs i dont see my cpu working. Only when iam actualy playing, rendering images or making animation etc then i see my cpu going higher. +0 / -0
Antelope 12 years ago He didn't say that Rick. He said that he chose a slightly slower CPU so that he could get a much faster hard drive. During Windows boot, for example, you're typically constrained by how fast your hard drive is, not by how fast your CPU is. And the crazy thing is that SSDs actually use less power (battery consumption) for their performance boost, whereas a faster CPU almost always means more power drain. Overall, his system is faster by speccing it this way. +0 / -0

Antelope 12 years ago It most certainly does. Maybe not as much as the hard drive, but I can assure you that a faster processor will load programs more quickly. +0 / -0
