I guess this would be best directed to Mojj xD

I'm going to try making a promotional blog page for ZK - a single long post designed to get people interested, with plenty of pictures, animated gifs, embedded videos etc.

What is the best way of making a gif of in game ZK, preferably cropped to only show part of the screen?

Imgur has a 'video -> gif' conventer

Skasi
Use LICEcap in (borderless or not) windowed mode. It's extremely simple and straightforward software. Just keep in mind that GIFs only support 256 colors(unless haxx).

If you plan on creating very short tutorial GIFs, make sure you enable the Display Keys widget.

you probably know how to save an zk ingame video

i then use (free and openscource tools):
Avidemux ->crop image region/save Image sequence as JPEG
Irfan View -> batch resize
Gimp->load images as layers->export as gif
(and if you upload it to imgur, they convert it back to webm)

result:

i was planning for long to create some kind of video/gif content before i retire from zk due to rl in one or two months, but i didnt get myself up to it yet, probably never will.

problem is i dont have a matching hardware at hand for recording zk. my office laptop i use for gaming has an i7 but no good graphics card and my desktop pc is a 2007 quadcore with good graphics... :(

if you can motivate me with demanding specific scenes, i probably will do it. right now i dont have gifs at hand.

also: if you really want to use this for promotion, please use embedded videos instead of gifs for quality reasons. i adapted the imgur embedded video player for the zk-page if you need assistance for that. you can use imgur to host the content and crosslink it, as i do it here sometimes. you just need your blog to use the few lines of code around to display it natively in any modern browser as html5 video.

Editing with http://www.virtualdub.org/
I like it because only needs one program and fast.
Recording:
Almost any PC can record small window at 0.1 gamespeed, which is enough when you resize/crop to gif dimensions anyway.

a) spring's recorder, in chat:
/createvideo
Use whatever the uncompressed format is named (least hassle and only need short recordings anyway)

b) Fraps
Super easy to use. either google for the last freeware version or not.
Or use Trialversion, the watermark gets cropped anyway.

And yes, instead of gif use the .webm that modern sites will offer you on upload.

I wanted gifs as I'm looking to put in short looping clips between blocks of text... for example, units spreading out using line move (couple of seconds long), another clip of units spreading into a circle to avoid AoE etc.

short looping clips

this works already also with html5 videos here.

for video playback use [*vid]http://videourl.(mp4|3gp|webm|ogg|ogv|gifv)[/vid]
click to play. with sound. no repeat

use [*gifv]http://videourl.(mp4|3gp|webm|ogg|ogv|gifv)[/gifv]
has setting to autoplay/sound is muted/repeat => just as a gif

i updated the forum bb-style collection as i see i missed this since its implementation there. sry ;)

I usually use adobe fireworks for gifs, you can record a video then just upload it as a series of frames so each frame becomes editable. It's really useful if you want to do something like crop a background out of a gif.

I used it to create and animate this signature for another game:
