just a suggestion: a fighter bomber would be interesting. something like the avenger with more powerful lasers and HE bombs.

the problem is, that fighters (AA) are weak in zk.

They are only strong, because air is slow (compared to real world planes) and fighters have time to deal damage.

If you really want powerfull lasers, use Banshees and Krow.
If you want a cheaper unit (more raiding, plane) be more concrete

Multirole fighters are more than capable of sniping mexes and expanding constructors. 3-4 of them can seriously mess up any player who neglects to get defenders. (Ofc, defenders will pwn your face but that is true of most raiders early on).

Once the enemy has defenders (as long as you don't lose your them), they can very easily patrol your own territory, sniping any raider forces that try to move out across the map.

Ofc they also snipe athenas and anyone starting air cons.

Anything much more powerful than that makes planes too strong early.

Nah, after the fighter game is done, which lasts about as long as the initial scout/probe attacks for land, you go immediately to the bomber game (assuming the enemy does not, himself, have fighters). Bombers require a level of defense above what counters fighters: The defenders you made to beat fighters are totally useless, you need Hacksaws, Flak or Razors.

These more expensive defenses create a very small no-bomber zone, allowing you to operate outside of those regions fairly easily. If you've played well and saved your bombers, by the time you hit the mid game, for the enemy to field enough AA to shut you down from all vulnerable targets actually costs more than you're spending on bombers.

Though yeah, mid-to-late game, once the enemy has wasted all this money on AA, you should switch factories and kill him with land. You CAN always start using nuke bombers, which, again, take 2x as much AA to kill as precision bombers. As google says though, the main reason to go air is to make the enemy waste his metal on AA.

This is very different to going air as a second factory in the mid-game of course.

It is important to know when to not make air. That said I have used Shadow late into a few games even when there is a fair amount of AA around.

As for the original suggestion a more powerful ground attack plane would:
  • Be too fast for balance
  • Be very difficult to control
  • Overlap with gunship role

i remember in suppreme commander, there was a torpedo throuwing plane. give this a thought? very specialized, but an option to break into sub-filled sea, which is not possible when you dont have option to bulid factory there...or you may terraform sea away lol.

AFAIK, both Shadows and Lichos dive to their target and at the very least fulfil the same role a dive bomber does (to inflict heavy damage on a single target using a single bomb).

Avenger does damage to land based forces just fine for its cost.

If anything is missing at all, it is a standoff bomber/fighter, which should fire an AA or AG missile as main payload (current airplanes require you to pass over the target, the standoff bomber would not need to) and have a few tiny plasma guns or lasers for aerial defense / dogfighting. Damage dealt by the missile should obviously be slightly less than the HP of a Hacksaw.

Seriously mojjj, it sounds like you've never even played air. First suggesting that we need a torpedo plane (Precision bomber fills that role) and then saying that air has no splash damage?
